As a professional makeup artist one of the questions I get asked by my clients on a regular basis is how you should clean your makeup brushes.  Now, there are a number of different ways to clean your makeup brushes but I decided to put together a quick tutorial for you so that you can see how I do it.

While doing some research to see what other beauty experts were saying I was a bit shocked to see that some people didn’t even know that this should be a part of their beauty routine.  The reality is cleaning your makeup brushes is quick and easy and something I hope you will build into your routine.

Why  Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Cleaning and washing your makeup brushes should be a regular part of your beauty routine for a number of reasons. Whether you realize it or not, when you put on your makeup and use your brushes, makeup, bacteria, oil, dirt, dead skin and even bacteria can get trapped in the bristles of your brushes. It doesn’t matter how clean you are- it is inevitable.

As you know, bacteria, oil and dirt can contribute to your pores getting clogged which in turn could lead to breaking out. I think we can all agree that none of us want that!

Besides avoiding clogged pores and acne breakouts, it is important to regularly clean your brushes for the sake of protecting them. Good makeup brushes are not cheap and learning how to clean them will help maintain the quality of the brushes. Buildup of everything described earlier can make your brushes feel scratchy on your face- this is not something we want. We want our brushes to be soft, smell good and be as sanitary as possible.

How Often Should I Clean My Makeup Brushes?

How often you clean your makeup brushes really depends on use. I would suggest cleaning your brushes at least every two weeks. With that being said eyeliner brushes should be cleaned every time you use them, as the build up of bacteria, oil and dirt could potentially cause an eye infection.
